Was the Tasmanian feed on D1 a backup link for SBS like CH9?
I see SBS is on C1 but encrypted. Bugger.

SBS is now fibre fed to Tasmania from Melbourne with the ABC mux.  The satellite feed was costing SBS too much and the government is cost cutting.

The story with nine last year was that GTV-9 had moved operations at the beginning of the year to central Melbourne and put up the sat feed on one of the networks leased SNG TPs as a backup while their new fibre feed to their transmission site was being completed.

Thanks for the info, good to know what has happened.

I have just received an email from SBS technical transmission. They say that the closing down of SBS on D1 is not due to any fibre transmission to Tasmania. They did not enlighten me of the reason.

Another email from the techs at SBS said that they advised that SBS Services are confined to Australian Boundaries. It was really good while it lasted.

I wonder how you confine a satellite service to the Australian boundaries??

I think the Aussies encrypt most things i.e. OPTUS AUROA and VAST are both encrypted, also they try to broadcast on AUS beams so if you are outside of Australia the size of dish you need to receive the transmission is unfeasibly large for the general public to be interested in receiving it.
