What is HD?
HD stands for high definition, it uses a higher resolution to
display video than traditional SD (standard definition).
The Freeview HD platform supports both 720P and 1080i HD
video, the video can be displayed with upto 5 times as many pixels as SD
resulting in outstandingly sharp images.
MPEG-4 / H.264 AVC
The Freeview HD platform uses the latest MPEG-4 video compression
technology.
MPEG4 is more efficient at compressing video than MPEG2, this is
why it has been chosen for the Freeview HD platform. It allows higher quality
video to be broadcast using the same amount of bandwidth as with MPEG2. The
example below shows how use of better compression technology reduces the
compression artifacts allowing video of higher quality to be received. The use
of high performance compression technology is particularly important where there
is large amount of data to compress i.e. HD signals.
